Lesson 1

The Baptism appears 120 times in the New Testament. What are the 5 kinds of Baptism that are mentioned in the New Testament?

Water

Acts 8:38 And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.

Holy Spirit

Matthew 3:11 "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

Fire

Matthew 3:11-12

"I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 12His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

Suffering

Mark 10:38-39
"You don't know what you are asking," Jesus said. "Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?" 39"We can," they answered. Jesus said to them, "You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,

Figurative (symbolic)

1 Corinthians 10:2
They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea.

Water Baptism: Some Distinctions

There are at least three different kinds of water baptism mentioned in the New Testament.

Baptism of John (Baptism of Repentance)

First, there is the baptism of John. “Now in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. ’ . . . And they were being baptized by him in the Jordan River, as they confessed their sins” (Matt. 3: 1, 2, 6). This is the distinct baptism of John the Baptizer.

Baptism of Christ

Next, there is the baptism of Jesus Christ. “And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water” (Matt. 3: 16). It is true that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in water, but as we will see later, the baptism of Jesus is different from the normal baptism that John practiced.

Christian Baptism (Baptism into Christ)

Finally, there is Christian baptism. In Acts 19, Paul discovered some disciples of John the Baptist who were still holding on to his message, long after he had been executed (see Acts 19: 1- 6). In Acts 19: 3- 5, Paul asked them, “‘into what then were you baptized? ’ And they said, ‘Into John’s baptism. ’ And Paul said, ‘John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus. ’ And when they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Note what happened here. Even though these disciples had been baptized with John’s baptism, they are baptized again in the name of Jesus. Obviously, since they were rebaptized, there is a difference or a distinction between the baptism of John and Christian baptism.
